Canadian Payroll Earning Types

Search Beanflow's supported system earning classifications, with the CPP, EI, income-tax method, and verified 2026 T4 treatment for each. Availability depends on the employee's payroll context. If your payment does not match a system type, the sections below route it to a dedicated workflow, a custom earning recipe, or — for some concepts — no earning path at all.

Beanflow supported system earning types

Search Beanflow's supported system earning classifications, including their CPP, EI, tax and T4 treatment. Availability depends on the employee's payroll context. If your payment does not match a supported system type, follow the custom earning recipes or the custom earning setup guide.

Regular salary, regular hourly, and overtime are calculated on the timesheet/payroll path and are not in this catalog. Vacation pay, holiday pay, and sick leave use dedicated workflows. Retirement, direct-tip, Quebec-only, and generic catch-all types that Beanflow cannot process end to end are not listed here.

Vacationable earnings follow the jurisdiction's employment-standards definition, not legacy catalog flags. WCB assessability depends on the Board and classification. A type shown as context-dependent is only selectable where Beanflow has a verified rule for the employee's province and pay date.

No system type matches?

These payments are all real, but they are not all custom earnings. Each one belongs to one of three paths: a dedicated Beanflow workflow, a custom earning you classify yourself, or — for concepts outside the current earning catalog — no earning path at all. The groups below walk through each path. For custom earnings, the T4 profile must be one of the four that Create Custom Earning offers today.

Employment income (Box 14)
CPP / EI / tax / Vacation / WCB
CPP applicability follows CRA treatment of the payment. Check the facts before you select Yes. EI insurability follows CRA treatment of the payment. Check the facts before you select Yes. Choose whether the amount is WCB assessable for your industry/board. You own this classification for custom earnings.
  • Beanflow does not automate statutory bereavement entitlement or multi-day leave tracking here.
  • Choose the T4 profile before the first approved payroll — it is snapshotted onto the record.

Voting leave pay

voting_leave

Employer-paid voting-leave wages can be a custom earning when you own the classification.

  • Beanflow does not maintain multi-year service history or apply CRA qualifying-award limits automatically.
  • Use T4 profile “Taxable benefit” so year-end reporting includes Box 14 and Code 40 when that is the correct treatment.

Prize or contest award

prizes_cash prizes_non_cash

Employer contest prizes and awards can be a custom earning after you classify the payment.

T4 reporting profile
Taxable benefit (Box 14 and Code 40)
CPP / EI / tax / Vacation / WCB

  • Work-linked vs non-work-linked prize treatment is a fact you declare; Beanflow does not infer it.
  • For a job-performance cash reward, prefer the system type Reward - Cash (Performance).

Standby / on-call pay

standby_pay

Standby or on-call compensation can be a custom earning when the employer/payroller owns the work-location and employer-control facts.

T4 reporting profile

  • Vacationable Earnings for standby pay are not automatic from a system label — you supply the classification.

Near-cash award (not a gift)

awards_near_cash

A taxable near-cash award that is not a discretionary gift can be a custom earning after you classify it.

  • If it is a discretionary near-cash gift, use the system type Near-Cash Gift (Taxable) instead.
  • If it is a job-performance reward, use Reward - Cash / Non-Cash (Performance).

Phone or Internet (outside cellular system types)

taxable_benefit_other

Prefer the cellular system types when they match. Internet or residual phone/internet cases can be a custom earning with Code 40 reporting.

T4 reporting profile
Taxable benefit (Box 14 and Code 40)
CPP / EI / tax / Vacation / WCB
CPP applicability follows CRA treatment of the payment. Check the facts before you select Yes. EI insurability follows CRA treatment of the payment. Check the facts before you select Yes. Taxable cash phone/internet allowances are regular-tax remuneration when that matches the payment facts. Do not select tax method “none”. Choose whether the amount enters the Vacationable Earnings base for your province. You own this classification for custom earnings. Choose whether the amount is WCB assessable for your industry/board. You own this classification for custom earnings.
  • Cash-flow and T4 are separate: a cash allowance adds cash to payroll; an employer-paid service benefit does not.
  • Do NOT use T4 profile “Employment income” for taxable phone/internet — that profile is Box 14 only and omits Code 40.
  • Cellular cash allowance → system Cellular Service Allowance (Cash, Taxable). Employer-provided cellular personal use → system Cellular Service Taxable Benefit (Non-Cash).

WCB top-up (accepted claim)

wcb_topup

After a claim is accepted, an employer top-up can be a custom earning when you own the claim and payment facts.

  • EI treatment and VE/WCB assessability depend on the claim and jurisdiction facts you supply.
  • This is not a true WCB advance or loan.

Denied or unrepaid WCB advance (taxable reclassification)

wcb_advance_denied

When a denied claim advance is not repaid, CRA treats the amount as employment income. Reclassify it as a custom earning that does not add cash again.

  • Uncheck “Adds cash to this payroll” so you do not pay the amount twice.
  • This recipe is only for the taxable reclassification — not for creating a new advance.

Maternity / parental top-up

maternity_parental_topup

Employer top-ups can be a custom earning only after you classify the plan and payment conditions.

T4 reporting profile
Employment income (Box 14)
CPP / EI / tax / Vacation / WCB
CPP treatment depends on the top-up plan and payment conditions. Do not assume; classify from the plan documents. EI treatment depends on the top-up plan and payment conditions. Do not assume; classify from the plan documents. Tax method and taxability depend on the plan/condition facts. No fixed default is published. Choose whether the amount enters the Vacationable Earnings base for your province. You own this classification for custom earnings. Choose whether the amount is WCB assessable for your industry/board. You own this classification for custom earnings.
  • Generic system codes cannot prove plan conditions. Leave blank assumptions at the door.
  • If the facts are uncertain, resolve them before the first approved payroll that includes the top-up.

Employer-specific one-off payment

When a real payroll payment matches no system type and no dedicated workflow, create a custom earning and supply the classification.

T4 reporting profile
Employment income (Box 14)
CPP / EI / tax / Vacation / WCB
CPP applicability follows CRA treatment of the payment. Check the facts before you select Yes. EI insurability follows CRA treatment of the payment. Check the facts before you select Yes. Choose whether the amount enters the Vacationable Earnings base for your province. You own this classification for custom earnings. Choose whether the amount is WCB assessable for your industry/board. You own this classification for custom earnings.
  • T4 profiles you may choose: Employment income (Box 14) · Taxable benefit (Box 14 + Code 40) · Taxable board and lodging (Box 14 + Code 30) · Not on T4.
  • Pick the profile from verified facts before the first approved payroll.

Use a dedicated workflow instead

Vacation pay / vacation payout

Use the vacation workflow (and termination vacation settlement). Do not invent an ordinary earning code.

  • Vacation pay is a dedicated Beanflow payroll identity, not a picker catalog row.

Holiday pay / holiday premium

Use the holiday-pay workflow or the documented draft adjustment path for special cases.

  • Special industry holiday classifications are not automatic from an earning code.

Sick pay

Use the sick-leave workflow (leave entries, paid/unpaid sick hours, balances).

  • Policy payments outside that workflow can use Custom Earning when you own the facts.

Group life / AD&D employer premium benefit

Use Group Benefits → group life. That workflow owns premium amounts, taxable benefit, and T4 snapshots.

  • Do not recreate Life/AD&D as a custom earning shortcut.

Regular salary, hourly wages, overtime

These are timesheet/payroll main-path earnings, not structured picker catalog types.

Outside this earning catalog

Do not force these into a system earning or a custom earning recipe. They are either not employer payroll earnings, missing facts Beanflow must own, or not expressible with current custom T4 profiles.

Direct tips (customer to employee)

Outside Quebec, direct tips are not employer payroll earnings. Beanflow does not model them as an earning or custom substitute.

  • If the employer controls collection or distribution, use Tips (Employer-Controlled) instead.

Tips allocated (Quebec)

Quebec-only classification. Quebec payroll runtime is outside current Beanflow product scope.

True WCB advance or loan

A real advance/loan is not employment income. Do not represent it as a payroll earning or custom earning.

  • Future support would be a dedicated non-earning payment/receivable workflow, not an earning code.

Severance pay / retiring allowance

Beanflow does not capture the eligibility facts required for CRA Code 66/67 reporting. Custom earnings are not an equivalent replacement.

  • A future dedicated termination-payment workflow would be required before this can be automated.

Stock option benefit or cash-out

Security-option deduction and election facts (CRA Codes 38/39/41/86) need a dedicated workflow, not an ordinary earning or custom type.

Director's fee

Director-specific payment counts, elapsed months, recipient identity, residency, and duty location change treatment. Custom earnings are not a safe substitute.

Loan interest benefit (T4 Code 36)

CRA reports employer loan interest benefits with T4 Code 36. Current custom T4 reporting profiles cannot express Code 36.

  • Available custom profiles today: Employment income (Box 14) · Taxable benefit (Code 40) · Taxable board and lodging (Code 30) · Not on T4.
  • Do not force this payment into “Taxable benefit” or “Employment income” — that would misstate the slip.

Quebec-only payroll classifications

Quebec payroll is not in current product scope.

How to read this table

  • CPP / EI / Tax are Beanflow's classification for the selected type. Choosing the type is your declaration of the business fact; Beanflow owns the calculation from there.
  • T4 (2026) comes from the verified annual T4 reporting policy, not from legacy catalog metadata.
  • Listed in picker is about selectability, not tax. “Always listed” means Beanflow can process the type in every supported province and pay date. “Limited by province / pay date” means the payroll picker only shows it where Beanflow has a verified rule — if it is missing for an employee, that context is not covered, not that the type is wrong. Types Beanflow cannot process end to end are not listed at all — there is no “unsupported” row to work around.
  • If a real payment matches no type above, use a custom earning recipe in the next section and supply the classification yourself, including an explicit T4 reporting profile (one of four: Employment income · Taxable benefit · Taxable board and lodging · Not on T4).
